This edition lets that Tibetan Musk DNA sink into your skin. The musk stays sultry and addictive, and now oozes with a very limited, wild Sumatran oud. Three full grams of Tiger Mylk adds its Unnu edge to make the whole brew smell more rugged and risque. The oud gives the scent a raw, skin-on-skin texture that smells almost feral, almost like it’s part of your skin rather than sitting on top of it.

It smells like skin after hours together – musky, milky, and slightly dirty in the most addictive way, with a quiet raunchiness that keeps unfolding the closer you get. The kind of scent that makes you aware of your own body – and anyone else who gets close enough to smell it…

I vividly remember receiving the musk pods that define the perfume. The hair looked disintegrated. You could breathe on the pod and they’d fall out. I had never seen musk so old. When removing the skin, the grains themselves looked fossilized.

To our best estimation, the musk in here was acquired in the 70s, some during the 80s, so they’d already been half a century old. But they are likely much, much older than that. Since musk pods were traditionally stored instead of used, some of this stuff could realistically date back dynasties and possess genuine historicity.

Until now, Tibetan Musk was composed for the musk – built around its potent, chocolatey core. This time, the compound is the fixative enhancing the musk – not vice versa.

The composition that accompanies the musk is… sweet. Not candy-sweet or fruity. Fossilized amber sweet. Blackcurrant laced with medicinal Hojari frankincense and lavender. A composition to complement the musk, not the other way around.

I was yearning for the urinal, fresh, gamey aroma of what I remember of my Siberian musk escapades. Instead, I got these pods stuffed with this earthy, vanillic aroma oozing out a subdued yet profound muskiness you’d imagine finding in the archives of a centuries-old Osmotheque.

I know what musk looks like and how difficult it is to cut through fresh pods. The hair, the texture, the skin – it’s like cutting up leather. But what I had just worked with was so soft and pliable and looked more like chocolate truffles. Creamy and intense, it smelled like the pods had been aged for a thousand years. The scalpel cut through the sack like butter.

I thought of how musk was used back in the day when they carried the actual sack like a fragrant amulet, yet how today we’re told to use [fake] musk in only the minutest quantities.

Just like oud, not all musks smell alike. Siberian musk is urinal and animalic, while Tibetan is chocolatey, truffle-like with hints of toffee. We gave someone a swipe of the tincture neat, and his first comment was, “This isn’t chocolate, is it?”

Tibetan Musk is all about showcasing the primal oomph of this animalic chocolate truffle.

But it’s how the musk is showcased that forms the perfume’s artistic prism: That golden fossil-amber facet that pierces through the musk that may well be the alter-signature pitch of the perfume, glistening through the mylky musky clouds.

This is Tibetan Musk after the lights go down, with Sumatran oud threaded through it from the start. The musk smells enticing, darkened by the oud’s mylky resinous character and mixed with the sweetness of prunes and palm dates – the kind that feels soft and sticky, with a faint fermented edge.

Cocoa butter blends into the musk and oud, giving the scent a creamy, almost oily texture. Tonka warms the mix without turning it sugary, while the oud keeps everything grounded, adding a deep, milky woodiness that stays present as the scent settles.

Cinnamon bark and clove come through dry and woody, echoing the Tyger’s rougher edges. Black pepper, lavender, and cardamom appear in flashes, sharpened by the Sumtaran resin beneath them before being absorbed back into the musk. Saffron adds a leathery, animalic note that smells fused to the oud rather than gliding over it.

Frankincense smells like warm resin rubbed into oud and skin at the same time, reinforcing the dark, balsamic core without smoke or incense, while a trio of Persian rose ottos with plenty of sparkle to add to the diffusivity of the previous edition, to play on the gourmand mylky glaze.

What remains on skin is a thick, musky scent where oud, zesty spice, and mylky warmth are inseparable. It projects well and lingers for hours.

Over the past century, musk became a filter, a flavor enhancer, a touch of salt to the main dish. And that’s fine. Perfumers have used musk as an enhancing fixative with great merit.

But Tibetan Musk, it’s musk musk musk drowned in oud oud oud and all the glitzy accessory notes that make you love this profile beautified through them.
