Many don’t know that my mentor named the oud.
This was nineteen years ago,
when I had a few names in mind and discussed the matter with him. When he learned that the wood it was distilled from cost $3,000/kg, he said, That’s it – Call it Borneo 3000.
Since then, to many oud adepts, Borneo 3000 = Ensar Oud
. For some, this was the one that got them hooked on oud. For others, it became the pinnacle that would never be surpassed. For more than a few veterans, it was both.
Its signature vanillic, cinnamony-honey profile doesn’t just make it the quintessential Malinau, but the most pristine portrait of the incredible sinking-grade agarwood it was distilled from. It quickly became, and to this day remains the benchmark for artisanal Borneo oud. Sure, there have been Borneos like it – but not on par with it. In the twenty years since it was distilled, it remains the best Borneo I’ve smelled.
It’s as old as EO, was named by my shaykh, was distilled from wood you can barely fantasize about today, and with twenty years maturation backing it, it’s impossible to replicate. EO’s history is in this oud.
It’s the oil that introduced oudheads to ‘Borneo’ at a time when few people even knew the word ‘oud’ – and those who knew oud only knew it in the form of Hindis or Cambodis…
That’s why it holds a special place in my heart and in the collections of those fortunate enough to own a bottle.
I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate EO’s 20th than paying tribute to the iconic 3000 by way of composing a perfume around its incredible fragrance.
This perfume hones in on Borneo 3000’s floral cinnamon signature imbued with subtle notes of raspberry and honey. You’ll also smell how it mimics the olfactory texture of the neat oud, which is semi-dry and polleny, through a fusion of creamy sandalwood and, of course… LOADS of Borneo oud!
And not any generic Borneo either…
Sadly, Borneo 3000’s distiller passed away in 2016. The Borneo 3000 signature you’ve smelled over the years was his signature – his ability to capture the scent of quality Malinau agarwood so accurately, so in-depth. While there’s the obvious familiarity when you smell any oud from Malinau agarwood, his distillations captured the 3000 effect.
Obviously, I couldn’t use the 2004 distillation here – it sold out over a decade ago. But we are fortunate to own the last of the distillers’ batches made in 2015/16 – like the last Borneo 3000 that was discontinued from the site over a year ago.
That’s the oud bursting through every crevice of the fragrance to give you a proper B3000 perfume rendition pampered with exquisite aromatics that play on the key facets of the oud’s own profile.
But the scope of this perfume doesn’t end with being a rendition of Borneo 3000…
B3K is the supreme Borneo oud experience. That’s why, in addition to the oud itself, you also have Borneo oud hydrosol and raw Borneo oud resin in the carrier! (Not to mention ancient Tonkin musk and ambergris…)
As with most EO perfumes, especially this year when our focus has been to go overboard oudifying new editions, Borneo 3000 is BRIMMING with oud…
Not counting the agarwood components in the carrier, the composition is 51%+ oud… so, you won’t smell faint echoes of Borneo’s vanillicious berries (or wonder if there’s even any oud present). Instead, the almost nine-years-aged B3000 oud oozes out everywhere – the top, heart, and base!
